About Joe

After losing several family members to addiction and mental health challenges, Joe Burton has spent more than two decades asking one question: Why do capable, caring people drift away from the lives they want to live? That question has shaped nearly every chapter of his life.

He’s led global teams, built and sold companies, served as president of Headspace, founded Whil, (a digital wellbeing company that served 600 companies, including 30 of the Fortune 100), and now serves as president and CEO of NovaOne, work that reaches millions of people seeking better mental health.

But GET THE GYST wasn’t written from a boardroom. It grew out of an upbringing marked by poverty, mental illness, and addiction, loss, leading under extraordinary pressure, years of chronic pain, plenty of mistakes, and the discovery that lasting change rarely comes from dramatic breakthroughs. More often, it comes from small practices repeated consistently.

Drawing on psychology, neuroscience, behavioral science, leadership, and his own life, Joe built the Get The GYST framework as a practical operating system for modern life. It helps people interrupt The Drift, regain clarity, and build lives of intention, resilience, and meaning.

Today, Joe speaks and writes about wellbeing, leadership, behavior change, and culture, helping individuals, families, employers, and healthcare organizations create environments where people thrive, not just survive. He's spent his career advising Fortune 500 leaders.

Joe lives in Marin County, California, with his wife, Sarah. Their sons, Jackson and Will, remind him that life’s most meaningful work rarely appears on a résumé.

Joe’s first book, Creating Mindful Leaders (Wiley), explored mindfulness and emotional intelligence at work.

He’s a certified trainer in several wellbeing modalities.

In recognition of his lifelong support, the Boys & Girls Clubs of America inducted him into its Alumni Hall of Fame.
